Saarburg during the Rheinland-Pfalz Fair

During the summer of 1998, April and I visited the Rheinland-Pfalz "State" Fair in the town of Saarburg. This is a view of the parking area located on a military training ground outside of town... thankfully they had buses running since you can see how far the cars stretch into the distance...

These are falls, walled in as you can see, in the center of town. This stream flows down to the Saar River.

This is the view in the opposite direction of the shot above. That's a mill, with the water wheel at the bottom left...

This is a shot further down the stream towards the Saar... this is my favorite shot of the town...

A street in the town of Saarburg decorated for the Fair.

Another shot within the town...

A view of the cathedral and the Saar River.

Another view of the Saar with a church on the hill... the parade was running across the bridge at right, then through a tunnel into the town... It was very hot that day, so a lot of people were sitting in the tunnel to avoid the sun prior to the start of the parade.

A carriage in the parade...

For some reason, the parade stopped for a while. Here's that same carriage stopped at the entrance to the tunnel.

Another view of the parade... the guy on the trailer is throwing apples to the crowd...

Another miscellaneous shot... notice the vineyards on the hills in the distance. Also, it's very common to see designs painted or as tile mosaics on the sides of houses and buildings. Note the knight on horse at right.

In essence, the fair was just like any fair in the U.S., with the exception that instead of a separate fairgrounds, the people use the whole town as a fairground.
